With the Scientific Revolution, and subsequent secularization of Europe, the overwhelming success of science and technology eroded belief in the existence of the transcendent God. The human subject, on the other hand, became empowered, liberated, and autonomous. Mankind began to see the world as an objective reality which can be studied by science and manipulated with technology. The cosmos became a de-sacralized object, which is no longer imbued with divinity and meaning. In monotheistic religion, God is transcendent. The rise of the great monotheistic religions began with the Axial age in the sixth century BCE. Tarnas first describes the ancient world view, in which the self is undifferentiated from the world-soul in a participation mystique. He proposes that a potential resolution, which he calls the participatory framework, has also been in development in the West for centuries. He then argues that with the advent of postmodernism, the modern world is in a serious spiritual crisis, which manifests as the global ecological crisis. Tarnas outlines the intellectual-cultural development of the modern world view from its origins in Greek and Judaeo-Christian mythologies. Tarnas argues that the movement from the Greek and Christian world views, through modernity and to postmodernism can be seen as a natural and dialectical unfolding of a collective mind or psyche. The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas That Have Shaped Our World View is a 1991 book by the cultural historian Richard Tarnas.

Narcissism is incorporated into the intertextual nexus, but without replacing Narcissus. In this article, I argue that while the narrative frame of the Narcissus myth is broken up in the novel, it remains poetically productive. Hesse had an intimate, but not uncritical, relationship with psychoanalysis, and his novel provides an interesting illustration of how the Narcissus reference was used in the direct aftermath of Freud's conceptualisation. This article examines in particular the Narcissus reference in Hermann Hesse's novel Narziß und Goldmund (1930). This prompts the question of whether, or to what extent, Freud's theory influenced subsequent literary treatments of the theme. 270-296 Article in journal (Refereed) Published Abstract įreud's theory of narcissism, developed in the 1910s and 1920s, can be seen as a radical break with the Narcissus tradition in that the myth of Narcissus is turned into a theory about man's psychosexual constitution. Order of Books » Authors » Order of Curtis C. Chen has an extensive network of connections to prominent science fiction authors and has studied under John Scalzi, James Patrick Kelly, and Ursula K. A new interplanetary conflict would be devastating for both sides. With Waypoint Kangaroo, Chen makes his debut with this outer space thriller. Now, Kangaroo has to stop a disaster which would shatter the delicate peace that’s existed between Earth and Mars ever since the brutal Martian Independence War. It turns out he isn’t the only spy on the ship – and he’s just starting to unravel a massive conspiracy which threatens the entire Solar System. While he tries to make the most of his exile, two passengers are found dead, and Kangaroo has to risk blowing his cover. After he bungles yet another mission, Kangaroo gets sent away on a mandatory “vacation” – an interplanetary cruise to Mars. But he’s pretty sure the agency only keeps him around to exploit his superpower. But what sets him apart is “the pocket.” It’s a portal that opens into an empty, seemingly infinite, parallel universe, and Kangaroo is the only person in the world who can access it. Sure, he has everything all the other spies have, including a ready supply of clever (to him) remarks. Chen Synopsis: Waypoint Kangaroo is the first Kangaroo novel by Curtis C.
